Its meeting time again. Our VP, of whatever the fuck he is, stands up in front of 40 or so low level employees and in his best little man intimidation voice tells us that,
"If we don't fix these numbers, it tells me that I will have to get rid of over half of this workforce."
Immediately, my hand goes up. I used to sit and ponder the consequences of my speaking my mind or the truth. Isn't that a wonderful environment to spend your working life? But I have served over two years in this place, and have reached that happy place akin to the faux-senility old people use to do and say as they please. I think those old people have just realized what we all should, we only have so much time so why spend all of it in quite complacence.
I do my best to remain as calm as possible while the eyes of this corporate kill-bot meet mine and snap a harsh, "Yes!?" Time to turn on the business speak so as to not get dismissed as base, peasant scum by a room dotted with other corporate automatons and their sympathizers.
"In terms of our execution on the stated metrics, how would a reduction in workforce allow this BU (business init*) to better meet our stated priorities?" Translation: “How does firing us help you meet these bullshit targets the business set? Less people usually means less work gets done tough guy.” His ball, which the company allowed him to retain as a token of their appreciation for his service, nearly regressed into his stumpy abdomen. “Frank, at this time we are past the how, we simply NEED to just get this done.” I am thinking, “Because scare tactics and undue stress are the best way to motivate a workforce shithead.” In his mind its crisis diverted. But clearly a mental note was taken to underline my name again on the lengthening company blacklist. However, there was an audible murmur amongst my fellow salary slaves. Could some of them have been shaken awake to realize, “wait, the company needs me too?” Could some have realized that they shouldn't work in fear? If this seed was only planted in a few minds, then watch out Intimidation Inc. you are going to have a weed problem in the coming weeks.
(*They be loving acronyms up in here.)
This type of dissent has become a small source of joy in my day to day struggle to find meaning within the belly of one of the world’s largest corporate beasts. I have for some time developed and toyed with a methodology to remain sane and funnel what inhumanity I experience here into a firm forward motion towards the goal of our emancipation.Yet this is not just a quest for individual freedom from one anomalous, tyrannical corporation. Instead, it is a quest for freedom from the different forms of oppression within the greater system, a system that breeds beasts like multinationals and those that drive them, day in and day out, and makes human beings ripe for the buying and selling. This particular corporation is only one example among countless others. In truth, there are much more pervasive undercurrents of evil which we should also address.
For a time, I feared I was relatively alone in this quest. I found and lost allies along the way. Nevertheless, I continue to fight the good fight and try to find a cure from the inside. Like in movies when the dude who is immune to the virus realizes he can synthesize an antidote from his own blood. It’s a great plot device. Plus, if you can’t beat them join them and then sap as much of their resources and time while figuring them out to eventually be part of their demise.
So far so good, but now the numbers have doubled. I have recently been joined inside this leviathan by none other than my brother. At first I feared for his mind and soul but soon realized he is as well if not better equipped to fight this than I. We have teamed up to discuss, debate, dissent and eventually dismantle the big broad system that has brainwashed humans into thinking its worth selling your soul to try to buy happiness in the form of cheap poisonous goods. We are looking for individuals who are similarly motivated to push for a new direction.
People need to ask more questions. Make them question as much as you can and you will cause a beautiful chain reaction.
Join us, help us, debate us, laugh, cry, and take action with us. Just don't expect to see pristine spelling or grammar.
